A teal blue palette with warm white interiors that entirely revamped a fibro shack.
By Lucy Feagins, Founder, The Design Files
When Lucy from The Design Files and her family took possession of a sweet little fibro shack on the Mornington Peninsula, it was in need of some love. It had an extremely basic kitchen and bathroom, no insulation to be seen, and random doors and windows all at different heights! But even though it needed quite a bit of work, they wanted to be really careful to update it in a way that would retain its nostalgic charm.
One way they made sure to keep that original 'beach shack' feel, was through their colour choices! Inspired by the local beaches, and with a nod to mid-century homes, they opted for a teal blue palette, with warm white interiors.
Originally, the fibro exterior of the shack was an aqua colour - and though they weren't particularly drawn to it initially, over time, this ocean-inspired colour grew on them. It was also something everyone seemed drawn to - 'love the colour!' people would say during the renovation. Lucy and her family didn't have the heart to tell them, that the exterior colour wasn't their choice and they probably planned on changing it.
So, when it finally came time to paint the outside, Lucy and her family found themselves gravitating to a pale blue palette, to retain that beachy feel. After sampling many Dulux swatches, they settled on Dulux Tiamo, a soft teal colour in Dulux Weathershield® which reminded them of the sparkling water at the local beaches, but still had just enough depth to it.
The shack is a cosy 90 square metres in size, with quite low ceilings in some areas, so they played it safe inside and went with white walls and ceilings throughout. They chose Dulux White Polar Quarter in Dulux Wash&Wear®, which has a warm base but still feels quite bright and clean. The results feel fresh, yet cosy and not too stark.
One thing the shack certainly lacked pre-renovation, was storage and a touch of feature colour to give it that perfect finishing touch.
They designed and built floor to ceiling cupboards here, with slatted vents integrated above. Initially, since these cupboards are adjacent to the kitchen, they thought of going with blonde timber doors, to tie into the kitchen cabinetry. But, after some careful consideration it was decided that a feature colour was needed. They wanted to inject a bit more personality into the space, and this spot gave them the perfect opportunity. In keeping with 'Dulux Tiamo' that had been selected for the shack exterior, they settled on another Dulux Wash&Wear® colour 'Dulux Cretan Green' - a deep teal blue that works perfectly in this space. It feels both beachy and contemporary – the perfect finishing touch.
