The 2008 theme, Surrounds – from runway to wall, took inspiration from fashion, technology, the environment and consumer attitudes. What we wore on the street was being translated into the colour we used at home. This year's six palettes included strong blues, vibrant pinks, Oriental reds, soothing earthy tones, space-age metallics and buttery yellows.
A dynamic palette with a daring influence of blues, Taboo reflected the rebellious influence in fashion, breakdown of conventional design, and eclectic union of non-traditional colours.
Taboo was all about interpretation and customisation; standing out and defying tradition to reflect one’s personality. The palette mixed aqua with electric blues and greens; in colours such as Blue Sail, Sea Breeze and Ashton Skies.
A palette for the fashion-forward and technologically advanced; the Galactic Pace palette was a manifestation of space age minimalism and an ultra-modern image of the future.
Taking fashion to the outer reaches of the universe, the Galactic Pace palette was a vision of techno-age, flying spacecraft and wearing silver suits. Taking cues from 'Doctor Who', this palette incorporated a thrilling blend of metallic silvers with deep charcoals and denim blue in colours such as Blue Steel and the metallic Prestige Shine from the Dulux Design Effects paint range.
Strong reds and blacks emerged as a hot palette for interiors in 2008, inspired by enthusiastic Asian designers and the increasing media attention on the Beijing Olympic Games.
The Oriental Age palette drew on traditional symbolic colours and influences to reflect the true essence of the Orient. The distinctive cultural, philosophical and design markers of the East were increasingly visible, specifically within China and India, whether in business, fashion, textiles, cuisine or lifestyle. This palette incorporated rich China reds, saffron oranges, golds and hues of black and white, all of which represented significant elements in modern and traditional Eastern societies.
Hope, survival and the sense of a new beginning – the Genesis palette was a direct reflection of society’s push towards carbon-neutral products and environmental stability.
The Genesis palette of ‘earthy’ mid-browns, yellow-greens, stones and beiges was perfect for a relaxed living space or reflective study. It was influenced by the next generation of manufacturers, designers, and consumers who grew up with the environmental movement prevalent in their daily lives. It was a time when acknowledging and striving towards global sustainability and ecological development was good and it was ‘hip’ not ‘hippy’ to own a recycled chair and buy carbon credits. Bamboo products reappeared, as did recycled plastics, timber and steel.
Gorgeous pinks and raspberries in the Infinite Beauty palette captured the intriguing combination of strength and inner beauty.
Infinite Beauty celebrated the intriguing changes around femininity in the ‘naughties’. It was also representative of the fascination and movement towards inner wellbeing; day spas and resorts, and how this transcended into our domestic lives. Incorporating such colours as Sweet Florence, Raspberry Fool and Poise; in tones of red, pink and purple; the palette evoked an aura that was as empowering as it was beautiful.
This palette is all about merging the old with the new, combining vintage vintage op-shop chic with modern design and technology.
Urbane Archaeology is an eclectic representation of contemporary individuality, inspired by colour themes dominant in the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s. This palette incorporates sepia and muddy greens with synthetic yellows and blues; in colours such as Sedia, Island Sea and Butterblond.
