How to use the Dulux PRECISION® Test Patch Kit

Many coatings and surfaces react differently to the chemicals applied to them. That’s why the best way to ensure you have the right product for your project is to perform a test patch first using our PRECISION® Test Patch Kit.

What you'll need:

  • Dulux PRECISION® Test Patch Kit

  • 3M lead test kit.

  • Masking tape.

  • Scissors.

  • Sharpie/permanent marker.

  • Water spray pump action.

  • Plastic garden sprayer bottle .

  • Stiff brush-nylon bristle.

  • Rubber disposal gloves .

  • Rags/wet wipes.

  • Safety glasses.

  • Plastic bag for responsible disposal of (hazardous lead) waste.

Step 1

Before applying the product, make sure you put on the rubber gloves provided in the kit.

Apply each product in a 20cm x 20cm test area and repeat this process three times per PRECISION® product.

Make sure you apply each product at the correct thickness per dwell time shown below.

Step 2

Smooth over the test areas with our PRECISION® paper with the print side facing out.

Tape down all the edges to protect from high traffic or weather conditions.

Step 3

Be sure to note down the dwell time (24hr, 48hr, 72hr) in a marker after each of the three applications, plus any notes on the weather conditions such as temperature and humidity - this will help guide you in your removal process.

Tip

It's important to test multiple areas of the building you are intending to remove coatings from. Test a range of surfaces of the building, and areas that receive plenty of natural light, as well as undercover areas. Coating removal is dependent on the layers of coatings, types of coatings together with the type and profile of substrate. Some sites may require multiple test patch kits.

Step 4

Check the results of your first test patch after 24 hours.

Put on your rubber gloves again and use the scraper to gently scrape under the paper starting at the corner.

Carefully lift the scraper, paper, remover and paint in one continuous motion.

Step 5

Immediately scrub the surface using water and the scouring pads provided once the coating has been removed, and carefully dispose as per local council regulations.

Step 6

Your surface should now be clean and paint free! If the coating hasn’t been completely removed, wait to check the 48-hour and 72-hour test results.
